What comes to mind when you think of “Japan”?

Japan is home to a captivating culture, with iconic elements like sushi, tempura, Mount Fuji, and geishas. Vibrant districts such as Asakusa, Shibuya, and Shinjuku draw many with their dazzling energy. These are part of Japan’s “Hare” — a special, extraordinary world that stands apart from the everyday.

Yet, for many Japanese people, daily life is far more tranquil and quiet. For instance, the beauty of the setting sun over a shopping street, the encounter with a cat in a narrow alley, or the casual conversations exchanged in a small café. These moments blend naturally into daily life, yet they have the power to touch the heart in unexpected ways. Such scenes are rooted in Japan’s “Ke” culture — a world where the ordinary and the subtle take center stage.

At EmptyTimes, based in Asagaya, we focus on capturing and sharing these “Ke” moments of everyday life. Rather than the dazzling tourist destinations, we seek to highlight the small joys and beauties that Japanese people discover in their daily routines. They may not be extraordinary, but they resonate deeply, leaving an impression on the heart.

We post new articles every other Saturday.
