On the southern side of Suginami Ward, the Keio Inokashira Line runs from east to west.
This railway connects Shibuya Station—where large-scale redevelopment is underway toward the 2030s—with Shimokitazawa Station, known for its vibrant subculture scene, and Kichijoji Station, a place that regularly ranks among the most desirable towns to live in.
Along this line lies Takaido Station, a town filled with memories for me, and the place I would like to introduce here.
From Takaido Station, it takes about ten minutes to reach Kichijoji and about twenty minutes to reach Shibuya.
By transferring to the Keio Line at Meidaimae Station, Shinjuku can be reached in roughly thirty minutes. The ease of access to central Tokyo is one of the area’s great appeals.
Passing through the ticket gates, Ring Road No. 8 opens up immediately in front of you.
Walk to the right and you will see the Kanda River flowing beneath the elevated tracks.
The layered landscape created by the wide roadway, the quiet river, and the Inokashira Line running above them is a distinctive feature of this station.
Inside the station are a convenience store, a curry shop, a doughnut shop, a bakery, and a 100-yen shop. Because the shops are gathered in one compact area, everyday shopping is easy and convenient. There is also a supermarket on a semi-basement level.
One detail that left a strong impression on me personally is that a ward residents’ office is attached to the station. Whenever administrative procedures were needed, being able to stop by there so easily was extremely helpful.
After exiting the ticket gates, the north exit leads toward Shibuya, while the south exit faces the direction of Kichijoji.
Since I used to live on the north side, I would like to focus mainly on the area around the north exit.
To the left of the north exit are a hot spring facility and a large supermarket; to the right are a traditional Japanese sweets shop, a gyudon chain restaurant, and a convenience store.
Cross Ring Road No. 8 by the pedestrian bridge and turn into a side street, and a quiet residential neighborhood quickly unfolds.
Along the Kanda River stands a row of cherry trees.
In spring, people gather there to enjoy hanami, and when the blossoms are in full bloom, their reflections shimmer on the surface of the water. It is a scene that lifted my spirits every time I saw it.
One of the most appealing aspects of the area around Takaido Station is the sheer number of supermarkets, ranging from large to small.
Oozeki, Olympic, Summit, Super Value—the list goes on.
When I first moved there, I did not yet understand the character of each store, so I found myself visiting a different one each time. I still remember how enjoyable it was to explore them, hopping from one supermarket to another while discovering what made each unique.
About ten minutes away by bicycle lies the neighboring station of Hamadayama. There you can also find Seijo Ishii, Kaldi Coffee Farm, and Seiyu.
The selection is well balanced—less about competing on price and more about offering variety—so it was easy to choose a store depending on my mood.
Beyond supermarkets, the area has everything needed for daily life: a post office, hospitals, restaurants, cleaning shops, and parks. Looking back, I can hardly remember ever feeling inconvenienced in my everyday routine.
There is, however, one small regret. The bookstore Kowashoten inside the station, which I used to visit often when I lived there, has since closed.
Even so, Takaido remains in my memory as a town that is easy to live in, with a calm and comfortable atmosphere.
If you are considering moving to Suginami Ward, I hope you might add Takaido Station to your list of possibilities.
