I often drop by bookstores.
Even when I don’t buy anything, I enjoy wandering through the aisles, browsing and taking in the titles.
I feel the same way about libraries.
Libraries tend to hold older books than bookstores, and whenever I come across unfamiliar ones, I can’t help but pick them up.
I also like stopping by local libraries when I travel.
Recently, I visited the Imizu City Central Library in Toyama. From the large observation windows on the second floor, the snow-covered Tateyama Mountain Range filled the view—it left a strong impression on me.
Sorry—this is supposed to be about Suginami.
There are more than a dozen libraries within Suginami Ward, but here I’d like to introduce the one that can truly be called their center: the Central Library.
The library is about a ten-minute walk from the south exit of Ogikubo Station, tucked into a residential neighborhood just south of Ome-kaido Avenue.
When you enter through the front doors, you’re greeted by a bright, spacious lobby and service counter. Beyond that stretch rows of bookshelves, along with desks and chairs for reading and research.
There are plenty of seats, but they tend to fill up fairly early.
As someone who admits to being a bit lazy, I can only admire the sheer number of people studying so diligently—are there really this many motivated people? I find myself thinking.
To the right of the entrance is a café, where you can enjoy good coffee and light meals like toast.
Happily, food and drinks are allowed at the counter seats facing the outdoor terrace—provided, of course, that you eat quietly.
There’s also a large exhibition space on the first floor, where books are displayed according to seasonal or thematic topics.
The second floor houses the children’s and young adult sections, while the basement is devoted to newspapers and magazines.
Now, my favorite part of this library is the park next door, aptly named Dokusho no Mori Park—the Reading Forest Park.
Spreading out behind the library, the park features a wood deck surrounded by trees, a small yet lively pond full of creatures, and beyond that, an open, sunlit grassy area.
Every part of it is calming and pleasant, but I especially like the wood deck and benches that overlook the grass.
Sitting on a bench amid the greenery, you can read beneath dappled sunlight, take a quiet rest, or simply spend time however you like. It’s a truly special place.
There is one more thing worth mentioning.
Within the park stands a life-size statue of Gandhi. Beside it is a stone monument engraved with his words of warning known as the “Seven Deadly Sins.”
I’m embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t known of them until I saw them here, but I felt strongly that they are words people living today should take to heart—for the sake of the future.
Standing tall amid the trees, Gandhi’s figure almost seems to be trying to pass that message on to us.
This may have turned into a bit of a ramble, but if you have the time, I hope you’ll visit this library someday.

私は本屋によく立ち寄ります。 本を買わなくても、ブラブラと店内を歩き回り、いろいろな本を眺めるのが好きです。
同じような感じで図書館を見て回ることも好きです。 図書館は書店にある本よりも古いものも多く、知らない本たちを見るとつい手に取りたくなります。
また、旅行した時に地元の図書館にフラッと立ち寄るのも楽しいですね。
最近では富山の射水市中央図書館に行きましたが、二階の展望窓から雪をかぶった立山連邦が大きく見えてとても印象的でした。
すいません、杉並の話ですね。杉並区内にも十数箇所の図書館がありますが、 ここではそれらの中心ともいえる中央図書館のことを紹介します。
荻窪駅南口から徒歩約十分、青梅街道から少し南に入った住宅地の中に中央図書館はあります。
正面入口から入ると、明るく広いロビーとカウンター、 その先にはたくさんの書棚や読書・調べ物などのためのデスク、椅子があります。
座席は多いですが、けっこう早い時間にいっぱいになってしまいます。 怠け者の自分は、（こんなに勉強熱心な人たちがいるのか！）と感心するばかりです。
入口の右手にはカフェもあり、おいしいコーヒーやトーストなどの軽食がいただけます。 そしてうれしいことに、外のテラスに面したカウンター席に限り、飲食物の持ち込み可なんですね。もちろん、静かに食べないとダメですが。 この他、一階には広いスペースを利用しての展示コーナーがあり、 折々のテーマに合わせて様々な本が並べられます。 二階は自動書、ヤングアダルトのコーナー、地下には新聞、雑誌のコーナーがあります。
さて、この図書館で私が一番気に入っているのは、図書館に隣接した、その名も読書の森公園です。 図書館の裏手に広がる公園は、樹木に囲まれたウッドデッキ、 小さいけれども生き物豊かな池、そしてその先の明るく開けた草地で構成されています。どこも心が落ち着く素敵な場所ですが、中でも草地を眺める位置にあるウッドデッキとベンチのスペースが良いです。 緑の中、ベンチに座り、木漏れ陽の中読書をしてもよいし、ゆっくり休んでもよし、思い思いに過ごせる格別な場所です。
そしてもう一つ、この公園の中には、あのガンジーの等身大の像があります。さらにその像の隣には、彼が残した「七つの大罪」という戒めの言葉を記した碑も。 恥ずかしながら、ここで見るまで知らなかったのですが、その言葉はまさに今、現代に生きる人たちが未来のために胸に刻むべきものだと思いました。樹木の緑の中、颯爽と立つガンジーの姿は、私たちにその思いを伝えようとしているようにも見えます….。
