I’ve been living in Asagaya for over thirty years now.
I came to Tokyo for university, but at the time, I had never even heard of a place called Asagaya.
It wasn’t until I started working that I moved here.
And once I did, I found it strangely comfortable—so much so that I’ve never left.
You might say I fell under the spell of the Chūō Line, as people often do.
When you live in one place for a long time, naturally many things change.
Some of those changes have been disappointing—there are shops and places that disappeared, and I still miss them.
But today, I want to talk about one thing that, thankfully, has remained the same throughout all these years.
It’s the green park along the Zenpukuji River.
The Zenpukuji River runs for about 12.3 kilometers through Suginami Ward, and roughly four of those kilometers are part of the Zenpukuji River Green Space and Wadabori Park (though honestly, it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins).
This green riverside path is a gentle sanctuary for local residents.
Walkers, joggers, and birdwatchers all come to enjoy their own quiet moments here.
(And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a kingfisher!)
I sometimes come here to jog as well.
Running alongside flowing water, enclosed by greenery, always lifts my spirits.
And during cherry blossom season, the park comes alive with hanami (flower-viewing) parties.
The sight of cherry trees in full bloom arching over the river, beneath a bright blue sky, is simply breathtaking.
In some spots, the forest is so deep and lush, it’s hard to believe you’re still within central Tokyo.
It’s a wonderful place for a walk—not just in spring, but in the fresh green of early summer, and in the colorful foliage of autumn.
If you walk from Asagaya toward Wadabori Park, you’ll come across a slightly weathered, two-story building nestled in the trees.
It’s a combination fishing pond and diner—a place that might seem a little intimidating at first glance.
But in fact, it’s incredibly charming.
Surrounded by trees, both the fishing pond and the dining area are surprisingly spacious.
There’s nothing fancy about the place—it’s unpretentious, comforting, and full of character.
It even made an appearance on the TV drama “Kodoku no Gourmet” (“The Solitary Gourmet”).
Inside, there are seats facing the fishing pond, where you can sit and watch people quietly casting their lines.
On a calm, sunny afternoon, when the place is quiet, I love sitting there with a cold beer in hand.
This area—one of the greenest in all of Suginami—is a precious space for so many people.
I sincerely hope it will remain unchanged for years to come.

私は阿佐谷に住んでかれこれ三十余年になります。
大学から東京に出てきましたが阿佐谷という街は、当時まったく知りませんでした。
社会人になってから住み始めたわけですが、住んでみると妙に居心地が良く、今に至ります。
いわゆる、中央線の魔力にはまった、と言えるかもしれません。
長く同じ土地にいると、変わっていくものも数多くあり、中には無くなって残念に思うものも沢山ありました。
でも今回は、昔から今まで、ずっと変わらずにあるものをひとつご紹介します。
それは善福寺川沿いにある緑地公園です。善福寺川は杉並区内を流れる約12.3キロメートルの川で、そのうちの約4キロ強が善福寺川緑地、和田堀公園となっています。（二つの公園の境目はよくわかりませんが）。
この緑豊かな川沿いの遊歩道は、近隣の人たちの、ゆったりした憩いの場となっています。
散歩する人、ジョギングする人、野鳥を観察する人など、皆それぞれにゆるやかな時間を楽しんでいます（野鳥といえば、運が良ければカワセミを見ることもできます！)。
自分もこの公園に時々走りに行きますが、水が流れるそば、線の中を走るのは、とても良い気持ちです。
そしてこの公園は、桜の頃は花見の人たちで大賑わいとなります。
晴れ上った空の下、 川の上にさしかかる満開の桜は壮観です。
また、場所によっては、とても都心近くとは思えないほど緑深いところもあり、新緑の頃や秋の散歩もすてきです。
そんな中、阿佐谷から和田堀公園の方へ歩いていくと、林の中にちょっと年季の入った2階建ての建物が現れます。
そこは釣り堀と食堂が一緒になったお店で、初めての人は入りづらい感じがあるかもしれません。でもそこは、実はとても魅力的な場所なんです。
樹々に囲まれた中、釣り堀も食堂もけっこう広く、その佇まいもメニューも気取らず、安心できる雰囲気です。以前には、ドラマ「孤独のグルメ」にも登場しました。
この食堂には釣り堀に面した実際の席があり、釣りをする人たちを眺めることができます。
明るい午後、人の少ない時間帯、私はその席でゆったりとビールを飲むのが好きです。
杉並区で最も緑の多いこのエリアは、多くの人たちのための大切な場所です。これからも変わらずに残ってくれることを切に願います。
