In a life full of expenditure, there might be some days when you do not feel like spending money at all.
These are the recommendations of places by the writer living in Suginami for decades.
⸻
・Chuo-library
Located in the southern part of Ogikubo. You can either bring your laptop or choose books from plenty of shelves and settle down. I recommend you lean on a bench outside if it’s sunny or fine; lots of green makes you refresh.
Other libraries are also recommended; there are 13 local libraries in Suginami.
・Otaguro Park
Located in the southern part of Ogikubo. There are lots of fun in every season, Japanese plum flower on early spring, green trees on summer, colored leaves on fall, and illuminations on winter.
・Suginami Animation Museum
Suginami is a city of animation films. The museum shows histories of Japanese animation, the process of making animation, and some films on a theater. You can also try one of the steps of making animation, workshops and events (all for free!).
・IMAGINUS
An interactive science museum located in the north of Koenji Sta. The entrance welcomes you with digital wall art. You can look around for science goods, lie on the field outside, or participate in a workshop or an event with 500 yen minimum.
・Za-Koenji
An art facility which is five minutes’ walk from Koenji Sta. There are theater halls which perform plays and hold art workshops. You can also rest in a café or in a lobby hall, or enjoy the architecture of the facility.
・Asagaya Pearl Center
A shopping street starting from the south of Asagaya Sta. There are lots of local markets and food stands for snacks to eat around; you may also have fun watching unique shops without buying. There’s a Tanabata Festival on every August, and you can see Japanese handmade decorations when you look up the ceilings.
